Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization based in New York City. Founded in 1974 in Manhattan’s Chinatown to advocate for equal rights, AAFE has transformed in the past four decades to become one of the city’s leading housing, social service and community development organizations. AAFE advances racial, social and economic justice for Asian Americans and other systematically disadvantaged communities, guided by our experiences as Asian Americans and our commitment to civil rights. AAFE is nationally recognized as an innovative affordable housing developer and property manager; we have created and preserved more than 1,000 affordable rental units in Manhattan and Queens and provided over $400 million in mortgage financing for first-time homebuyers. Through our affiliate, Renaissance Economic Development Corporation, AAFE supports immigrant entrepreneurs, offering low-interest loans and training programs. From neighborhood offices in Chinatown and the Lower East Side (Manhattan) and Flushing and Jackson Heights (Queens) we provide an array of multilingual counseling and educational programs in support of low-income tenants, seniors and immigrant youth. AAFE strives for a more equitable city, through research, advocacy and grassroots community organizing. 

Position Summary & Responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.


The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations and supervise a team of staff members including functional responsibility over the integrity of the general ledger system, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The Controller will ensure that AAFE has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and the timely completion of financial audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staff, to support program budgeting and forecasting, budget vs actual analysis, and program audits.


  • Monitor all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage monthly end close process, including establishing pre-close, closing, and post-close procedures.
  • Manage the monthly process for allocating shared and indirect expenses by segment.  
  • Monitor receivables to ensure timely grant reimbursements, and the alignment of expenditures with grant and program budgets throughout the grant period.  
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual agency-level and segment-level financial reports in an accurate and timely manner for Director of Finance review and approval.  
  • Prepare financial data and reports for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Maintain and monitor internal controls structure. 
  • Coordinate all audit activity with auditors and Fiscal staff.  
  • Coordinate and collaborate with senior leadership team in the annual budgeting process.   
  • Support the Director of Finance and Co-Executive Directors in the preparation of financial reports and analysis to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.  
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
  • Maintain insurance coverage for the agency.  


The ideal candidate will be part people-person, part process maven and will have a genuine love for all things accounting systems, MS Excel, and numbers. We are seeking a do-er who actually looks forward to audit season because they know they are going to ace it. 

  • Minimum of a BA; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • 4+ years’ experience in professional non-profit accounting and grants management.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • Familiarity with ledger systems including MIP Fund Accounting Software and MDS (Multi Data Services) Property Management System 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Experience in training fiscal staff on internal controls and accounting processes.  
  • Demonstrated leadership in facilitating internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization and promoting a collaborative work environment.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to AAFE’s mission; a proactive, hands-on problem-solver who will own, in partnership with the Director of Finance, the responsibility for finance and accounting.
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented
  • Strong technical, analytical and project management skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize while working under multiple deadlines
