Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization based in New York City. Founded in 1974 in Manhattan’s Chinatown to advocate for equal rights, AAFE has transformed in the past four decades to become one of the city’s leading housing, social service and community development organizations. AAFE advances racial, social and economic justice for Asian Americans and other systematically disadvantaged communities, guided by our experiences as Asian Americans and our commitment to civil rights. AAFE is nationally recognized as an innovative affordable housing developer and property manager; we have created and preserved more than 1,000 affordable rental units in Manhattan and Queens and provided over $400 million in mortgage financing for first-time homebuyers. Through our affiliate, Renaissance Economic Development Corporation, AAFE supports immigrant entrepreneurs, offering low-interest loans and training programs. From neighborhood offices in Chinatown and the Lower East Side (Manhattan) and Flushing and Jackson Heights (Queens) we provide an array of multilingual counseling and educational programs in support of low-income tenants, seniors and immigrant youth. AAFE strives for a more equitable city, through research, advocacy and grassroots community organizing. 

Position Summary & Responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Program Manager, Youth & Family, the Youth Counselor promotes AAFE’s mission to empower immigrant communities through the management of after-school programs, community service learning and one-to-one counseling. The counselor is responsible for the quality of youth programming and in meeting contract requirements. The ideal candidate will be inspiring, a good role model, will approach their work with integrity, empathy and understanding and will have a true sense of community.  Responsibilities include the following:


  • Create and facilitate strengths-based curriculum for an afterschool leadership development program. 
  • Support a group of 50 youth (from 3 high school locations) through their high school career.
  • Develop workshops on specific skills (i.e., public speaking, time management, networking, research, etc.).
  • Foster team building and community among racially and ethnically diverse youth. 
  • Create Individual Participant Plans (IPPs) with all youth participants and monitor progress towards achieving their goals. 
  • Work with program staff to engage with parents of youth participants; and enable youth to gain parent-youth communication skills through workshops, one-on-one meetings, etc. 
  • Provide college, career, and personal counseling to high school students two days out of each week at a school location. 
  • Report on program outcomes achieved. 
  • Provide support on youth and family related programming as needed (i.e. college visits, career conferences, community service events, parent events, etc.). 
  • Assist in coordination of special events and other tasks that may be necessary to advance AAFE’s organizational mission. 
  • Assist Program Manager in preparing regular reports to funders. 
  • Participate in department and staff meetings and training. 
  • Help on light chores to maintain the optimize organization and neatness in the office. 
  • Coordinate and community schedule at advance to ensure office coverage. 
  • Support office operation and mutual aid events as needed. 
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field required. 
  • 2 years of  experience in community outreach and counseling for youth.
  • 2 years of experience in planning/development 
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated attention to detail and focus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite and social media platforms
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to present information to a diverse client base- specifically racially, ethnically and socially diverse.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and information
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple complex projects
