AAFE Community Development Fund (CDF) is a U.S. Treasury-certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) dedicated to promoting, protecting and advancing homeownership for minority, immigrant, low- and moderate-income (LMI), and underserved households and communities of New York City (NYC). AAFE CDF was established in 1999 by its parent organization Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE), and in the nearly two decades since its founding has helped hundreds of families buy their own homes and help many others stay in them and keep them in good condition through its combination of counseling and loan services. AAFE CDF is also a member of the New York Mortgage Coalition (NYMC). 


Position Summary:


AAFE CDF seeks an individual with knowledge in the area of homeownership and mortgage lending for the position of Homeownership Counselor. The Homeownership Counselor will work closely with clients, prospective lenders, and program partners to advance clients’ ability to purchase a home or sustain/retain their home. The Homeownership Counselor will work under the direct supervision of the AAFE CDF Deputy Managing Director.


  • Intake and assess clients’ overall financial situation as it relates to homeownership. 
  • Counsel clients in regards to budgeting, debt reduction, credit building and homeownership education.
  • Assist the clients with creating a budget and a detailed action plan to overcome their financial situation.
  • Manage and ensure clients’ file is completed from intake to resolution per organization and HUD guidelines.
  • Facilitate and coordinate homeownership education workshops, including scheduling, marketing, and procuring speakers.
  • Assist clients’ applications with mortgage and/or other loan/grant programs with the necessary supporting documents for the lender/funder to assess clients’ readiness for a loan/grant. 
  • Ensure all clients’ data are entered, tracked, reported and monitored in regards to clients’ progress through our client management system, Counselor Max database and excel spreadsheets as needed by funders and/or direct supervisor.
  • Maintain proper program files, records and completion of reports to funders and supervisor in a timely manner. 
  • Build relationships with lenders, realtors, and other professionals to develop referral sources.
  • Attend marketing and outreach events via in-person or virtual.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality with all client and organization information. 
  • Meet expectations for attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other administrative matters as determined by the supervisor.
  • Some evening or weekend hours may be required on a limited basis. 
  • Perform other related work and duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor Degree preferred in social work, public administration, business administration, or urban planning. 
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in mortgage lending, homeownership counseling, residential real estate, financial counseling and/or nonprofit lending. 
  • HUD Certified or able to obtain HUD Certification as a Housing Counselor within 3 months of hire.
  • Experience in financial and credit counseling is a plus.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, critical thinking, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Entrepreneurial instincts and a keen interest in community development issues.
  • Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office and Google Documents.
  • Familiar with Counselor Max and/or Salesforce is a plus. 
  • Fluency in a foreign language is a plus.
