COMMUNITY BUILDER (Bilingual in English and Chinese)

AAFE Community Services is seeking a Community Builder to lead and develop enhanced social services and engagement within partner NYCHA locations and our AAFE residential tenants.  Candidates should be creative and analytical, strategic and empathetic, good listeners and communicators, constantly work to identify opportunities and create unique valuable connections between groups of people. 

The Community Builders objective is two-fold, to provide engagement and support for the growing AAPI population in key NYCHA developments, including building bridges among different ethnic and cultural groups within NYCHA to empower residents to become involved in shaping their collective futures in the community. Within our AAFE residential services program, the Community Builder will develop and coordinate programming and resources for our tenant population and neighboring community members to build stronger resident cohesion and to build an authentic and engaged residential community.


  • Conduct community needs and assessment that identifies shared values, connective tissue and common experiences 
  • Develop activities, events, workshops that can even accelerate the forming process in a group and that breakdown psychological or cultural barriers between people. This includes cultural, mental health, work force financial literacy workshops, and self-care and wellness classes, Mutual aid events.
  • Identifying ‘Connectors’ such as stakeholders and resources across the community and provide the opportunity for them to come together regularly to exchange learning and map community assets. 
  • Identify local organizations and residents in the community who want to adopt a strengths-based approach to building hospitable and inclusive communities. Use these connections to build local partnerships that encourage collaboration between organizations and residents. 
  • Capture, prepare and share learning and key finding reporting regularly with program partners, agency leadership and funders. 
  • Liaise AAFE communications department and elected officials to ensure local stories from the learning site are being shared, this includes marketing and outreach. 
  • Collaborate with other AAFE community services programs, as well as property management team to ensure mission alignment and success. 
  • Provide training to community-based groups and individuals as appropriate, based on the desires and interests of the community.  
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including mentoring, coaching and training. 


  • Management AAFE tenant service and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Operations oversite of AAFE Community Resource Center at 111 Norfolk Street; including co-location partnerships, activities and calendar of events.
  • Budgetary oversite and management.
  • Create a welcoming environment.
  • Collaborate with internal AAFE programs, property management, social services and housing counseling leadership

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Social Work of related field, preferred Master’s degree in Social work or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in community and/or program development in a Community based organization
  • Computer literate – Word, Excel
