HOUSING ORGANIZER

Job Purpose 

The Housing Organizer AAFE’s mission to reduce homelessness through tenant empowerment and the provision of case management and advocacy services to address client’s issues with rents, rent arrears, repairs, eviction, and tenant-landlord disputes. The Housing Counselor is responsible for delivering quality services that are aligned with both AAFE’s mission and meet contract requirements.

• Build strong base of members through strategic community outreach (door to door, phone banking, mailings or event based) to educate neighborhood residents and groups about updated housing policies, rezoning process, community development plans, gentrification, anti-displacement strategies.
• Maintain the base through regular check-ins and engagement activities that motivate tenants to develop a sense of ownership of their communities
• Work with tenant and resident leaders to organize tenant associations to collectively address and resolve housing issues 
• Establish and maintain tenants associations; provide facilitation and technical assistance to tenant associations 
• Create and maintain positive working relationships with community stakeholders and partner and organization 
• Provide counseling service for tenants with housing issues when needed 
• Stay informed about current housing policies, rezoning process and housing landscape 
• Develop, identify, implement and/or support campaigns to preserve affordable housing and combat harassment/displacement 
• Compile monthly report to capture activities, outputs and impacts 
• Maintains building, client and activity records physically and digitally in an up-to-date and organized manner 
• Assist the Director and Program Managers in preparing regular reports to funders 
• Participate in department and staff meetings and trainings. 
• Share light chores to maintain the optimize organization and neatness in the office.
• Coordinate and community schedule at advance to ensure office coverage.
• Support office operation and mutual aid events as needed. 
• Other responsibilities as assigned. 

• Experience in organizing, campaign planning/development 
• Understand and committed to work with immigrant communities and culturally diverse communities and environments, strong sense of social justice and belief in youth power and potential
• Bilingual in English/Spanish and/or English/Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin) is required
• Ability to work evenings and weekends
• Ability to speak in public and conduct presentations
• Experience canvassing
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple complex tasks
• Highly motivated self-starter who is able to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent organizational and computer skills including Google Suite, MS Suite, and social media

Working Conditions: 

The schedule is 9 am – 5 pm, with lunch break from 12 pm – 1 pm, from Monday to Friday. The position is based in the office. Weekend and late-night hours are required for community outreach and professional trainings occasionally.
